Hello! My name is Desirae and I am currently a RISE fellow in the Biology Master’s program at Northern Arizona University. In 2019 I graduated with a bachelor’s in Biomedical Science, minors in chemistry and psychology, and a degree from the Honors College. My life started in Rancho Cucamonga, California where I lived a chaotic, yet adventurous life thanks to my family and friends. I developed a love for science in junior high, where I started learning about cells. Because I loved my science and health courses throughout school, my parents always pushed me to be in the medical field. I started my Biomedical Science degree with the desire of being a doctor. However, when I began research in Dr. Catherine Propper’s lab, I grew a deep passion for my project. I am currently studying the effects of arsenic and estradiol exposure on human breast cancer cells. Although research was an unfamiliar pathway for my family and I, (being a first-generation student) they too became interested in my work and now my Dad’s new favorite word is “carcinogen”. When I am not in lab, I always look forward to my hobbies like hiking, bowling, or enjoying Flagstaff’s beauty. However, nothing is like being home where I am always on adventures with my friends, taking my dog for a walk or going to the beach. |
